PAINTER AND ILUSTRATOR
BORN IN BARCELONA AND SPENT HIS FORMATIVE YEARS, FROM THE AGE OF FIVE TO SEVENTEEN, IN LLAMPAIES, A SMALL VILLAGE IN THE AMPURDÁN REGION. DANI GREW UP IN AN ENVIRONMENT DEEPLY CONNECTED TO ARTISTIC PRACTICE, AS HIS MOTHER, A SCULPTOR, MAINTAINED HER STUDIO AT HOME. THIS EARLY EXPOSURE FOSTERED A NATURAL FAMILIARITY WITH ARTISTIC LANGUAGE AND DISCOURSE.
HE PURSUED FORMAL STUDIES IN ART HISTORY, FILM DIRECTING, AND ILLUSTRATION. ALTHOUGH MUSIC AND WRITING HAVE CONSISTENTLY ACCOMPANIED HIS CREATIVE LIFE, DRAWING HAS REMAINED THE CENTRAL AXIS OF HIS PRACTICE, BRIDGING HIS WORK IN ILLUSTRATION AND PAINTING. FOLLOWING HIS STUDIES IN FILM, HE EXPERIENCED A DECISIVE TURNING POINT, RECOGNIZING THE NEED FOR A MORE IMMEDIATE AND DIRECT MODE OF EXPRESSION. DRAWING EMERGED AS A RETURN TO A FAMILIAR AND INTUITIVE SPACE, ALLOWING HIM TO ARTICULATE HIS IDEAS WITH GREATER SPONTANEITY.
DANI’S WORK IS PRIMARILY FOCUSED ON THE HUMAN FIGURE AND THE EXPLORATION OF COMPLEX EMOTIONAL STATES. OVER TIME, HIS STYLE HAS EVOLVED FROM MORE DISTORTED AND EXPRESSIVE FORMS TOWARD A MORE DIRECT, FLUID, AND VIBRANT VISUAL LANGUAGE, IN WHICH COLOR PLAYS AN INCREASINGLY SIGNIFICANT ROLE AS A CARRIER OF EMOTION. HIS TECHNIQUE COMBINES WATERCOLOR, GOUACHE, AND COLORED PENCIL ON PAPER, WHILE HIS WORK ON CANVAS HAS SHIFTED FROM OIL TO ACRYLIC, ENABLING A FASTER, MORE DYNAMIC APPROACH ALIGNED WITH HIS EXPRESSIVE INTENT.

SINCE HIS FIRST EXHIBITION, TRADICIÓN ORAL (2005), TWO CENTRAL THEMES HAVE STRUCTURED HIS WORK: THE PASSAGE OF TIME AND THE HUMAN NEED FOR CONNECTION. A SUBTLE BUT PERSISTENT SENSE OF MELANCHOLY PERMEATES HIS PRACTICE, EVEN IN MOMENTS OF APPARENT FULLNESS. FOR DANI, ART CONSTITUTES BOTH A NECESSITY AND A MEANS OF PROCESSING AND COMMUNICATING LIVED EXPERIENCE.

RATHER THAN CITING SPECIFIC INDIVIDUAL INFLUENCES, DANI IDENTIFIES WITH PERIODS IN ART HISTORY MARKED BY CRISIS AND TRANSFORMATION, SUCH AS THE LATE GOTHIC, MANNERISM, PRE-ROMANTICISM, AND THE EARLY AVANT-GARDES, WHEN ARTISTS MOVED AWAY FROM OBJECTIVE REPRESENTATION TOWARD MORE SUBJECTIVE INTERPRETATIONS OF REALITY. HE AIMS TO EVOKE COMPLEX EMOTIONAL RESPONSES, FOCUSING ON UNDERSTATED YET MEANINGFUL MOMENTS WHERE SIGNIFICANCE LIES AS MUCH IN SUGGESTION AS IN REPRESENTATION. HIS APPROACH IS GROUNDED IN A HUMANISTIC PERSPECTIVE, USING FICTION AS A MEANS TO EXPLORE DEEPER TRUTHS ABOUT HOW INDIVIDUALS RELATE TO ONE ANOTHER.

HIS EARLY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WAS SUPPORTED BY A GRANT FOR YOUNG CREATORS FROM THE FUNDACIÓN FITA IN GIRONA, WHICH ENABLED HIS FIRST PROFESSIONAL EXHIBITION. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, BEING SHORTLISTED FOR THE COMPOSTELA PRIZE MARKED ANOTHER IMPORTANT STEP, LEADING TO THE PUBLICATION OF HIS FIRST ILLUSTRATED BOOKS. LATER PROJECTS SUCH AS VIAJES EN TRENES DE PRIMERA CLASE AND EL SANTO REPRESENTED SIGNIFICANT MILESTONES IN HIS CAREER. HOWEVER, THE MOST PROFOUND SHIFT OCCURRED WITH THE SERIES INTIMIDAD, INITIATED DURING THE PANDEMIC. THIS BODY OF WORK NOT ONLY REDEFINED HIS ARTISTIC PRACTICE BUT ALSO BECAME THE CENTRAL FOCUS OF HIS ONGOING RESEARCH.

HIS CREATIVE PROCESS TYPICALLY BEGINS WITH AN IDEA OR AN EMOTIONAL IMPULSE RATHER THAN A FIXED IMAGE, OFTEN CONCEIVED IN NARRATIVE TERMS, AKIN TO CONSTRUCTING A CINEMATIC SCENE. FROM THERE, THE WORK DEVELOPS INTUITIVELY, ALLOWING SPACE FOR TRANSFORMATION DURING ITS EXECUTION.
